          PERSONAL HISTORY

          Zawawi was born around in Karachi, British India (now Pakistan), where his father Abd al-Munim bin Yusuf served as purchasing agent for Sultan Sa'id bin Taymur, ruler of Masqat and Oman.

          His early education was in Bombay (now Mumbai), and his schooling continued in Beirut and then at Cairo University where he earned his medical degree.
