What was that like?
It took a long time to find Bin Laden, even four years before the 9/11 attacks. I spent many, many weeks of hanging out with people associated with Bin Laden in London and then travelling to Pakistan and into Taliban-controlled Afghanistan where he was then living.
It was a very lengthy, cloak-and-dagger process, because Bin Laden didn’t wake up on September 12 2001 saying I suddenly need to careful – he had been quite careful for a long time.
