Bushnell was born in 1802 in Bantam, Connecticut. After completing his education at Yale College and studying law, he felt a profound calling to the ministry.
He was ordained in 1833 and served as pastor of the Second Congregational Church in Rochester, New York, before becoming the minister of the Second Congregational Church in New London, Connecticut, in 1845.
